How The Fragrantist collects, uses, and protects your information.
Last updated June 30, 2026
Draft for internal review. This page is a working draft and has not yet been reviewed by counsel. It should not be treated as final or legally binding until that review is complete.
Overview
The Fragrantist helps you compare fragrance prices across decant shops and full-bottle retailers. We’re not a retailer ourselves, we don’t ship anything, and we try to collect as little of your personal information as we can while still making the site useful. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what choices you have.
We’ve written this in plain language on purpose. If anything is unclear, contact us and we’ll explain it directly.
Data we collect
We only collect data that supports a feature you’re actually using. Here’s the full list:
| What | Why | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Account login, price alerts, newsletter (if you opt in) | Until you delete your account |
| Password | Stored as a one-way hash, used for authentication | Until you delete your account |
| Username | Shown on your public profile and reviews | Until you delete your account |
| Collection data | Powers your personal collection and savings calculator | Until you remove it |
| Review content | Builds the community accuracy database other shoppers rely on | Kept indefinitely, anonymized if you delete your account |
| Taste profile | Personalized recommendations | Until you delete your account |
| Price alert targets | Sends you a notification when a price drops | Until you cancel the alert |
| Affiliate click events | Aggregated commission tracking for Partner Stores | 90 days |
| Location | One-time weather lookup for daily fragrance suggestions | Never stored, used in real time only |
| Purchase date (optional) | Helps detect batch differences in reviews | Until the review is deleted |
We don’t collect your real name, phone number, payment information, precise location, browsing history outside The Fragrantist, social media data beyond what’s needed for login, or device fingerprinting. We never process payments directly, every purchase happens on the retailer’s own site.
How we use it
We use your data to run the features you sign up for: showing your saved collection, sending price alerts, personalizing recommendations, and maintaining the review database. Anonymized, aggregated activity may also be used to improve our recommendation models and, occasionally, in aggregate trend reports for industry partners. We never sell your personal data, and we never share individual-level user data with brands or advertisers.
We don’t run advertising trackers. There’s no Google Analytics, no Meta Pixel, and no third-party ad network code on the site. Our traffic and usage numbers are also built in-house rather than bought from an analytics vendor: we don’t use cookies to count visitors, and we never send your browsing activity to an outside analytics company.
How we measure traffic
Our site metrics are built in-house rather than run through a third-party analytics vendor. We don’t use a cookie to count visitors: a unique visit is determined by a hash of your IP address and browser type that changes every day, so it can’t be used to identify or follow you over time, and the underlying IP address is discarded immediately after that calculation. Your approximate country is used for regional traffic breakdowns, using the same request information your browser already sends any website you visit, not a separate lookup service.
Partner Stores and affiliate links
Some stores listed on The Fragrantist are marked Partner Store . We earn a commission when you buy through these stores, at no extra cost to you. The price you see is the real price, and partner status never changes which store is shown as the best price or where it appears in our rankings. We’d rather be upfront about how the site makes money than pretend it doesn’t.
Your rights
You can manage most of this yourself from your account settings:
- Access: download all the data tied to your account, export your collection as CSV or your reviews as JSON. Requests are fulfilled within 30 days.
- Correction: edit your profile, collection, or reviews at any time, changes take effect immediately.
- Deletion: delete your account and personal data at any time. Reviews are anonymized rather than removed (the content stays, your name comes off) so the community accuracy database stays intact. Processing takes up to 7 days, and you’ll get a confirmation email once it’s done.
- Portability: export your collection and taste profile data in a standard format on request.
- Objection: unsubscribe from marketing emails with one click, opt out of AI training signal collection or taste profile generation from your account settings.
California residents: we don’t sell personal information, but you can still submit a “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” request by contacting us.
EU residents: our legal basis for processing is legitimate interest (for recommendations and security) and consent (for marketing emails). We’ve signed data processing agreements with our providers and can select an EU database region on request.
Children's privacy
The Fragrantist is intended for users 13 and older. We don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under 13, and account creation requires confirming you meet this age requirement. If we discover an account belongs to someone under 13, we delete it immediately.
International users
The Fragrantist is based in the United States, and your data may be processed here. If you’re in the EU or another region with its own data protection laws, those protections still apply to you, and we aim to meet them through the practices described in this policy.
Security
We encrypt sensitive data at rest, never log passwords or full authentication tokens, and restrict access to personal data to what each system actually needs. If a breach affects your data, we’ll notify you within 72 hours of discovering it.
Changes to this policy
If we make a material change to how we handle your data, we’ll update the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, notify you directly by email.
